Spring Odds and Ends

We’ve got an exciting series of books already lined up, beginning with Will Eisner’s Comics and Sequential Art and Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative, and Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. Whether you’re new to comics, or have been reading them for years, these books are essential reading for everyone interested in the genre.

We’ll also be hosting a special “Teaching Comics” brown bag this semester with a special focus on Watchmen. We’ll focus on using sequential art narratives in the first year composition classroom, with guests who have taught comics for several semesters. This brown bag will be open to all Purdue faculty and instructors.

As the semester goes on, we’ll develop a list of works to read and discuss this semester, with special focus on how we would teach and what sorts of academic projects we would pursue with each.

For now, as the first meeting comes closer, start reading Eisner’s Comics and Sequential Art and Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative, and McCloud’s Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art.
