Meeting 10/26: The System of Comics

We’ll be meeting Monday, October 26 at 5:30 P.M. at Greyhouse in the private meeting room.

We’ll be hearing a version of Kate Tanski’s paper that deals with Understanding Comics and Thierry Groensteen’s The System of Comics. We’ll be then be discussing Kate’s paper and The System of Comics itself.

This 2009 translation of Groensteen’s 199 French work on bande dessinée the world over provides a new voice (in English) in the field of comics study.

For more, see Neil Cohn’s excellent and critical review, at his fantastic blog, The Visual Linguist.

Meeting 10/9: Reading List

PSAN will meet up this Friday at 9 A.M. at Greyhouse in the private meeting room.

Bring your list of books that you’d like to read and discuss this semester.

N.B. If you can’t make it to this meeting, do not despair! Email in what you’d like to read, and we’ll add it to the potential list.

We’ll also work on scheduling meeting times that work for each book.

Meeting 3/2: WATCHMEN

It’s about time we got here.
This Monday we’ll finally be tackling Alan Moore’s Watchmen. In fact, this is a fairly big time for us, as we have a Watchmen brown bag session on Friday 2/27, plans to go see the film this weekend, and another Watchmen discussion (both film and comic) on Monday 3/9.

Meeting 2/23: Caroline Coraline

It’s P-SAN vs. adaptation this week, as we discuss not only the recent graphic novel CarolineCoraline, but also the book that inspired it, and the current movie. How do we look at changes to the work(s)? Is there an original that adaptations should be judged against, or is each medium’s piece an “original”?

Find out the answer to these and other exciting questions at P-SAN’s next meeting.

Meeting 2/16: Kingdom Come

We’ll be talking about the Mark Waid scribed and Alex Ross painted Kingdom Come, which originally came out in 1996. This beautifully rendered work provides much to talk about, revealing and investigating the super-hero (or underwear pervert, if you’re so inclined) genre.
Just remember, it’s all about the Billy Batson.

Meeting 2/9: Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol

This week we’ll be taking a look at Doom Patrol: Crawling From the Wreckage, which collects issues 19-25 of the third series of Doom Patrol, Grant Morrison’s debut. Morrison had written Arkham Asylum and Animal Man for DC and previously created Zenith and wrote Judge Dredd and numerous others for 2000 AD.

Nancee will be guiding us into the weird, wonderful world of Doom Patrol. We’re sure to talk about the British Invasion of comics along the way, too.

Meeting 2/2: Persepolis

Our second meeting of the spring semester will cover Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood. It’s available in its own volume, and as part of The Complete Persepolis.

Steve will be our designated director, bringing his experience teaching and discussing the work with his First-Year composition classes.

This book is in Steve’s office, HEAV 210, so if you need to borrow one, stop on by.

Meeting 1/26: Eisner and MCloud

For our first meeting of the spring semester, we will be discussing Will Eisner’s Comics and Sequential Art and Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative, and McCloud’s Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art.
Kate will be our designated director for the McCloud, and Steve will tackle Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative. If someone wants to be our point for Comics and Sequential Art, please email Steve or Juan.

All of these books are in Steve’s office in HEAV 210, so if you need to borrow one, stop on by.
Steve also has Persepolis book one in the office, which we’ll be discussing February 2.

Meeting 12/5: Dororo and Scott Pilgrim

For our final meeting of the semester, we will be discussing Osamu Tezuka’s Dororo Volume 1 and Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life (a.k.a. Volume 1).

Come join us for the tale of a formless blob who must fight 48 demons to regain his body parts and the story of a young Canadian who must fight his new girlfriend’s seven evil ex-boyfriends.

It’s on!

Several members will be bringing past materials and assignments to share and generate discussion.
Comics we will be discussing in this context include Watchmen, Persepolis, Understanding Comics, Maus, Fun Home, Spiderman, Achewood and more.
